Writing with Light

Hockey Night in Canada

We had a great time at my son’s hockey tournament last weekend in Montreal. I was trying to capture different shots during the game and I really liked the way this composition came out. I thought this would be a good image to try my hand at digital painting. After processing this through Adobe Camera Raw I then used Topaz B&W Effects to desaturate the image and then adjusted different settings in the details & strength sliders (under simplify) until I ended up with this final version.

  1. Really well processed Edith. The way you’ve composed this with the painting adds to the sense of movement. Well done.

  2. Nice action! When I saw the title, I thought for sure I’d see Howie Meeker and maybe even Don Cherry! This is better though!

Reminds me of a James Lumber’s type painting Edith; very effective. Gerry

  5. I love the painterly effect you have captured here – I wouldn’t have thought it would work with such a high-energy sport as Ice Hockey – but you’ve proved me wrong. It helps pare down the image to the raw elements. I guess that’s the Ref in the long trousers about to get his shins hacked! Nice work, Edith

  8. You’re right, the composition of this shot really works, although I’d be interested in seeing a less-stylistic version for comparison. (Not that it doesn’t work as it is!)

  16. I know how difficult it is to photograph ice hockey. My grandson is playing it also. Your photo is excellent!

If You do not mind, then I present some photos from

    Junior Ice Hockey
