Thunder Hole
As this was my first time in Acadia National Park we decided to try to see as much as we could by driving the Park Loop Road, a 27 mile meandering roadway taking the visitor through long stretches of rocky shoreline, mountains, lakes and woodlands. It took us 2 days to drive the loop (we stopped a lot 🙂 ). That’s what happens when you stop to hike, photograph, climb rocks, photograph, enjoy the views, photograph….well you get the idea. At one point, just before Sand Beach, Park Loop Road turns into a 2 lane one way road which allows motorists to park in the right lane in order to get out and explore. This comes in very handy as some of the parking lots fill up quickly.
One of the many stops we made was at Thunder Hole. At this spot the ocean burrows its way into Mount Desert Island. At certain times of the day, when the tide is right and the waves are large, the ocean rushes into the slots formed by the rocks. When the void is filled the water has nowhere to go but up. It’s quite the sight…so I’m told…we didn’t see it. The waves weren’t crashing too hard that day. Oh well, another reason to go back.
One thing I was determined to do was use my 10-stop ND filter and shoot some long exposures. We were sitting on the rocks enjoying the gorgeous view so I thought this would be a good opportunity to do just that. I ran back to the car to get my tripod and I proceeded to leap, hop and scamper down the slippery rocks, tripod and camera in tow.

Gee, I hope you got to Somesville. The bridge is a picture classic. And the waves do crash at thunder hole. It’s just not the most unusual thing. But from all the people and the setup around it, you would think it was a real wonder.

It was a perfect spot to sit on the rocks and take in all the beauty around.

Wonderful long exposure Edith. The water is so silky. Thunder Hole is nice to see when the tides are right but the crowds are usually at their highest and it is hard to et a shot.

Nice use of the 10-stop ND, Edith. The smoothness you were able to bring out in the water hepsp in the composition as the white water acts as the leading line to the rest of the scene.

Like yor shot – reminds me of when I’m traveling on business in Kristiansand (Norway) – the skerries in the fjords is an experience – some are so big that you can dock the boat with them and climb up on them… 😉
