Honest Ed’s
Honest Ed’s is somewhat of an institution in Toronto. It opened its door in 1948 and became the world’s first true bargain store. Apparently, on opening day Ed painted a sign over the store that read “NAME YOUR OWN PRICE! NO REASONABLE OFFER REFUSED!” The store was mobbed. Today Honest Ed’s sits on the corner of Bloor & Bathurst St. in the Annex district of downtown Toronto. This year Honest Ed’s celebrates its 65th anniversary and in July of this year the Mirvish family announced their intention of selling Honest Ed’s and some of the and surrounding it. This Toronto landmark will probably close its doors in the next 2 to 3 years.
A few weeks ago my photography club held a photo walk in Mirvish Village and Honest Ed’s. Here are a couple of images from that evening.

Great story about Honest Ed’s. The days of starting a business in the same way today would be impossible. Super exposure of the night scene, Edith.

What a wonderful place – looks like it would not be out of place next to the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas. Just love that door, too.

Really great shots, Edith! Gosh, I hope the place survives the changes that seem to be heading it’s way. I really get concerned when I think of all the heritage we’ve lost in the last little while and hope someone comes along with an appetite to save these sort of places. Great work here, my friend.

Thank you so very much Toad. Yes its unfortunate that they’re going to be tearing this down. It seems that all that keeps going up in the city is high rise condos. The construction never seems to end.
