Writing with Light

Subway Love

In this age of email and Facebook and instant messaging I still get excited when I get a package in the mail. Nine times out of ten it’s something that I’ve ordered online. The package that I received last week was very different. It was a book. Not just any book, but a yet to be released copy of Subway Love by Nora Raleigh Baskin. Why is this exciting you ask? Because the cover image is mine.

Last July I was approached by the publisher about using my image of a Rome subway car for a new book they were publishing. They had found the image online and asked if I could send them a high resolution image so that they could see the quality. After some back and forth with the publisher they created a mock-up of what the cover design would look like and we negotiated a licensing deal. To say that I was thrilled would be an understatement. Here’s a quick iPhone image of the book.

  2. There’s no way that email can ever approach the feeling of getting something physical in the mail. Congrats on the book cover!

  3. Wow, wow, wow!!!!! That is amazing :). I sort of know what that thrill feels like because I have been doing book reviews and some editing/beta reading on the side, and my name has now been mentioned in the acknowledgments in quite a few books. Plus my review for one book is on the back cover. It is a very wonderful feeling, and you should be extremely proud of yourself because you are an excellent photographer! Do you keep picking it up and looking at it over and over?

  22. Congratulations. Both versions are interesting, though I prefer yours. What intrigues me is that they felt obligated to contact you when what they did with your image could be argued as coincidence, no?

    • Thanks Emilio. I think they did a great job on the design of the cover so that it matched the story. The image is my copyright so the publisher (or anyone else) must obtain a license to use the image or any part of it so yes they were obligated to contact me.

      • I agree with you about their rendering of your image. They did a great job. And I don’t mean to be argumentative or dense but what I think I’m confused about is their use of the subway car doors. Isn’t the graffiti different? And the people seen in the windows? If so, is it still your image? Please feel free to erase this comment if I am annoying or not explaining myself adequately.

        • Hi Emilio…no your not being dense or argumentative. I think the problem maybe with the picture of the book cover itself. I shot it with my iPhone so the colour is not very accurate. The image they used is mine. The graffiti has not been changed but the image was cropped because the original is a landscape orientation and the book is portrait. The people in the windows were added by the cover designer so that it matches the story of 2 young people who meet on the subway.

Thanks for putting up both images as it’s interesting to see what they’ve done with your original.
