Writing with Light

The Bay of Poets

Located 11km south of La Spezia in Liguria, the town of Lerici is little gem in the Italian Riviera. Lerici is situated on the Bay of Poets and the image below was taken from my hotel, The Doria Park.

When planning our itinerary, Portofino in the Italian Riviera was one of the places we wanted to spend a couple of nights, unfortunately we couldn’t find a hotel so we decided to locate ourselves in close proximity. I had actually never heard of Lerici but my husband said it would be a good spot and it looked charming. We were still undecided until a friend recommended we look into the Doria Park Hotel. I’m so glad she did because the hotel was located high on the hill overlooking the harbour and the main piazza.

The Bay of Poets also known as the Gulf of La Spezia is so known because it was a favourite of many poets including Byron and Shelley. Percy Shelley drowned there during a sudden storm when returning from Livorno to Lerici in his sail boat.

  1. What an incredible photo and view. I’m no poet, but dare me to spend an afternoon there and not be inspired.

  2. I love the name the Bay of Poets though I hope Shelly is the only poet to meet an end there

  3. It does look very picturesque, although the drowning death of Shelley is not a selling point. Did you go onto a yacht whilst there?

      • I was in Switzerland and Italy back in June. The second part of our holiday was on Lake Como. Having been before, we knew the scenery was stunning, but have never managed to capture just how beautiful the area is. My photos are seriously lacking when I look at yours.

        Thanks for sharing.

  8. Looks like you chose well, Edith. A beautiful view across the bay. The poets really got around on their Grand Tours – they passed through the Alps too.

What a great view Edith. I think the best images are those where you can picture yourself there. This is one of those images for me.

  21. Wow! This is such a wonderful photo for many reasons. I just taught Byron, Shelley, and all the other romantics a few months ago. I would have loved to have this image when we talked about Shelley’s untimely death. 🙂

    • Thanks Chandra. Have you seen the new movie that’s out, Trip to Italy? It’s about two friends traveling through Italy but in the footsteps of the poets. I think you”d like it.
