Manarola Waves
One of my most favourite tools in my camera bag is my 10-stop ND filter and on my second day in Manarola it was overcast, the sea was churning and the waves crashing against the rocks. This was the perfect time to shoot some long exposures.

Oh Edith, I just love this photo! It has a little bit of everything – colour, texture, drama. It’s wonderful!

I could have sworn I left a comment here. Sorry, Edith. This image I just fall into. I love the way the water lights up on the rocks so you have taken this with slow shutter speeds. Oh to be there in person as you were. *sigh* Maybe next life? I just caught the comment about the ND filter. I just bought an ND400 with Niagara Falls in mind. Now I must rethink things, find some water and try this baby out! Thank you for posting this!!! It brought memories of when I stood on a dirt road in Italy, looking out over the water at a village that was built right into the cliff. I don’t think I have ever seen anything quite like that until I saw your image. Too bad I was not into photography then as I am now. What I would give to go back! LOL (((HUGS))) Amy

Thanks Amy. I love my 10-stop ND filter. I actually took quite a few shots to get the water just right. The waves were crashing in and I wanted to get the water receding back so had to be very careful with my timing.

I believe the ND400 is 9-10 stop filter and I know what you mean about timing. This is what I do with waterfalls. I concentrate my full attention to one area which I have focused on, kind of get a feel for the rhythm and as I see what I have been expecting, click, I depress that shutter immediately. It’s all in the timing. And a good eye. You have both!!! Incredible image!!! Thank you again!!! xx Amy

It’s not just the waves, my Dear Edith, those little water falls, (result of the waves?), those cliff like rocks, tho green and lovely slope and the beautiful and colourful buildings, all worth time and effort. Thanks for capturing and presenting these to us. 🙂

Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. The “little water falls” are the result of the water receding during the long exposure.

not knowing much (anything) about filters, what does this one do (besides the look of the water). The colors of the houses stand out so well against that sky.

Laurie, I used a 10 stop neural density filter. This filter blocks out the amount of light that enters the camera by 10 stops. It allows you to do long exposures during the day. The filter itself is very dark so you won’t be able to see out of your viewfinder once you have the filter on. I set up my shot first, figure out the exposure I need and then put the filter on and take the shot.
