The Candy Stand

When I was in Lerici, Italy my husband and I took a leisurely walk around the waterfront. On that beautiful, sunny day vendors  were lining the small harbour selling handmade crafts and souvenirs but it was the last vendor that really caught my attention.

This scene was as colourful as you see it. I took 3 bracketed exposures to ensure that I caught the full dynamic range of the scene and processed the image in Photomatix.

  1. Great shot. There is just so much to look at. This is one of those shots that’s not a photo but a window to look through. 🙂

  2. Just picked myself up off the ground – I think I fainted at the sight of all that glorious sugar. I just love this shot Edith :).

And are you going to tell us which type of candy you purchased? 🙂
The colors are so great – especially that red!

    • Thanks Laurie. OK…confession time. I had gelatto just prior to finding the candy stand so I didn’t get any candy.

  12. Super shot Edith. I use Photomatrix quite a lot. It’s such a very useful tool when tackling challenging exposures as well as, as you’ve demonstrated so well, capturing the full dynamic range. Fabulous!

  13. This one has just stuck with me! It’s so sunny and happy, it feels like everything I love about fairs and carnivals. It reminds me a bit of Norman Rockwell, but with the advantage of having been a real place with real people (and real candy!)

Do you have a tutorial on how to get that effect?

I think I’m going to need a print of this when I’ve got a steady income again, let it brighten up my family room.

    • Thank you so much for your kind comments. As I said in the post this was 3 separate exposures which I tone mapped in Photomatix. Once I got it the way I wanted it to look I brought back into Lightroom where I tweaked the shadows and highlights slightly and increased the clarity slider.

    • Thanks Andy. I hold my head down in shame. I didn’t buy anything at the candy stand. I had just finished a gelatto and was already on a sugar high 🙂
