Toronto Cityscape – Foggy Encounter

One of the workshops that Denise Ippolito led for my photography club last month was a sunset/night cityscape shoot. It was cloudy and raining for most of that day so there was no sunset and we almost didn’t have a cityscape. The best place to photograph the Toronto skyline is from Ward’s Island. We boarded the ferry to the island at 5:45pm for the  7 minute or so crossing which would give us plenty of time to walk around and set up for what was supposed to be a 6:50 sunset. As the ferry started moving and I looked across Lake Ontario I realized that I couldn’t see the island. All I could see was thick fog. We arrived at the island and I looked across at Toronto…it wasn’t there. OMG…there goes the workshop. After a few minutes of internal panic, Denise, being the ultimate professional and workshop leader, led us on a walk and help us “see” other beautiful parts of the island that we could photograph. Ok I started to think…this was ok…this was going to workout. Think positive…think positive…as soon as it gets dark and the city lights turn on we’ll have a cityscape….I hope!

Being photographers and knowing that light and conditions can change from minute to minute we set up our tripods by the waterfront and waited. Here’s the view…

….can you see the CN Tower? It’s there…honestly but at least we could now see lights and some of the buildings. We waited and as the minutes passed the fog started to roll out and our beautiful city came into view.  Here’s the progression…

iPhone Friday – Puddle Reflections

One of the workshops led by Denise Ippolito was at Graffiti Alley in Toronto. I’ve shot here before and the street art is just amazing. Unfortunately I couldn’t participate in the workshop as I had to work but it is only 5 minutes from my office so I walked over to say to the group. Of course while I was there I couldn’t let the opportunity pass me by without taking a few iPhone shots and this reflection was just to good to pass up.

Shot with my iPhone 4S and edited with HDR FX Pro.
