The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre – Celebrating 100 Years

Earlier this year I posted images from a photography shoot my photography club did at the Winter Garden and Elgin theatres here in Toronto. You can see some of the original posts here, here and here. This year the theatre complex is celebrating its 100th year and I am beyond excited that some of my images were used in their anniversary brochure including the front cover. I knew about this in advance but was equally pleased and excited that another of my images was selected as the front cover of the Ontario Heritage Trust magazine.

Below are scans of the brochures so please excuse the quality.

Capture The Colour Photo Contest 2013

For the second year Travel Supermarket is holding its Capture the Colour photo contest. I was very excited to hear about this years contest and I’m very grateful to Ingrid from Road Tripping Europe for nominating me to participate in this years contest. Thank you Ingrid 🙂

To enter the competition you must publish a Capture the Colour blog post and submit 5 images in each of the colour categories. You must also nominate 5 other travel bloggers.  If you’d like more information on this years contest you can find it here.

So after a long hard look at which of my pictures were worthy of entry and exemplified the chosen colours….here they are:

Yellow

Monterey Bay, marina, night, long exposure, ships, water, travel photography

I shot this image in July. I started the trip in San Francisco and drove down the Pacific Coast Highway to Los Angeles. I spent a couple of days in Monterey Bay and this was the view of the marina from fisherman’s Wharf. I love the variations and different shades of yellow, some deep some not, from the lights in the marina to the lightning in the sky and the rocks in the foreground. You can see the original post here.

White

San Marco Square, Venice, Italy, travel, deserted, sunrise,

One of the things that I loved about my sunrise shoot in Venice was the quiet. As anyone who’s been to Venice will know, during the day and night San Marco Square is teeming with tourists. Being up and out before sunrise not only provides a photographer with incredible light to shoot in but the Piazza if virtually empty. I chose this image of St. Mark’s Basilica because of the white washed marble of the dome, pillars and floor. As you can see it was still early as some had found a place to sleep after a long night of partying.

Red

Elgin Theatre, Toronto, Ontario, Balcony, ornate, interior

This grand theatre is The Elgin and is located in Toronto. It dates back to 1913  and showcased up and coming talents such as George Burns, Gracie Allen and Milton Berle. The theatre was purchased by the Ontario Heritage Trust in 1981 and fully renovated in 1987. Today it showcases Broadway hits such as Cats, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Rent and Avenue Q. While certainly not subtle, the red in this image brings out the regal and grand look of what a theatre should be.

Green

Jamaica, Falmouth, shack, rum, barrels, island

Falmouth, Jamaica. There are lots of colours to choose from in this image but for me it’s the green shutters and doors framing the 2 men inside this makeshift rum stores that attracted me to this scene.

Blue

Geddy's, Downunder, Bar Harbor, Main Street, restaurent, bar,

While up for an early morning shoot in Bar Harbour, Maine I came upon this scene walking down to the waterfront.  The blue of the sky and the blue paint of the building coupled with the ladder and workers screamed Norman Rockwell to me.

The Elgin Theatre

I held off posting this because the brackets for this image were used in our most recent round of HDR Tennis on Facebook. You can click on the link and check out the other versions of this image from the many talented photographers that participated.

Back to the Theatre

A couple of weeks ago I introduced you to the Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre complex in Toronto. (You can see that post here.)  The initial series were all images of the Winter Garden. While the Winter Garden Theatre was designed to look like a botanical fantasy, the Elgin Theatre is much more grand and traditional, filled rich fabrics and gold leaf. You can see from this image how ornate the opera boxes are.

Ground Floor, Please.

Because of the nature of its stacked design, The Elgin Theatre on the main floor and the Winter Garden Theatre on the top floor, access to the Winter Garden is via the grand staircase or the hand operated passenger elevator. Yes this is the real deal, grill door and all! And it works…I went for a ride 🙂
