A Hard Drive Crash, A Day in the Country & An Aspiring Photographer

First I hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine’s Day, President’s Day and Family Day (if you’re in certain parts of Canada). You may have noticed that I’ve been a bit absent this week. I have a good explanation…my hard-drive crashed 😦

No need to panic though because everything is backed-up on a raid drive and then I have a 3rd back up of all my images. The problem is I’ve been without my Mac for almost a week. See the Mac’s internal hard-drive is less than 3 years old. I had replaced it back then because I needed a larger one. Well it was still under warranty (that’s good) but it will take 7 – 10 days to send it back to the manufacturer and get it back (that’s bad). It should be coming home this week.

My son, Sam is home this week from University for reading week and it’s really nice to have a full house. Since today was family day we took a drive up to Port Carling, Muskoka. Sam has started showing some interest in photography so we did some shooting together today. Unfortunately I can’t process my images until I get my computer back but here’s a shot I took of Sam with my iPhone 6 and processed with Snapseed.

iPhone Friday – Street Art at Gordon Beach – Tel Aviv

It’s been awhile since I’ve dedicated a Friday to iPhoneography and I thought it was time. I found myself leaving my big DSLR behind on most days this trip. On the days that I gave myself a break from lugging around the monster my iPhone was getting a workout.

These images were taken at Gordon beach in Tel Aviv. Along a section of the promenade wall an artist created the most amazing beach scenes that made people stop in their tracks.

Click on the images to enlarge (they really do look better).

The Carmel Market

You may be wandering where I’ve disappeared too this time? I’m back in Israel and will be here for the next couple of weeks. If you’d like to follow along on the adventure you can do so by following me on Instagram or on Facebook. I’ll be posting there frequently.

Here’s a quick iPhone shot from today at the Carmel Market in Tel Aviv.

All edits done in Snapseed.

iPhone Friday – Boston Edition

Sorry for my absence this week. I was in New York last week for a little R&R and a family function. Didn’t do as much shooting as I’d hoped but I do have a few shots to share with you next week. Today I wanted to share some shots taken with my iPhone 6 while out and about in Boston a couple of weeks ago. All shots were processed using Snapseed. The 3rd image, “Inside Fenway” was also processed with PhotoToaster.

iPhone Friday – Imaging USA

I got back a couple of days ago from Nashville where I attended Imaging USA 2015. I can’t say enough about the experience. It was 4 days filled with educational seminars and photographic inspiration.

I was fortunate to reconnect with some old friends and make new ones. I finally got to meet photographers who I had only interacted with online and that was a thrill. I didn’t do any shooting because the days were filled with seminars dealing with the business of photography; processing workflow; lighting techniques and inspirational lectures. Armed with my new iPhone 6, I did take a couple of hours on my first evening and headed downtown to see a little bit of the city as this was my first time in Nashville.

iPhone Phun – TIFF

Yes it’s Saturday so I couldn’t very well call this iPhone Friday so consider this a special edition. This past Thursday was opening night of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). TIFF was founded in 1976 but has grown to be the most influential film festival.

Every September Toronto is host to world renowned celebrities and movie makers. This year the city has closed down King Street, home of the TIFF Bell Lightbox building and where many of the venues are located, and has turned into a pedestrian walkway. I work about a five minute walk from the epicentre of activities and yesterday at lunch time, armed with my iPhone, a friend and I ventured out to explore.

I’m heading back out this evening but wanted to share with you a few of my shots.

Weekly Photo Challenge – CN Tower – Between

CN Tower Sandwich

Last week I spent the afternoon out on Centre Island for a work function. Once back in the city my colleagues and I were walking across Queens Quay heading towards our next destination…drinks on the patio 🙂 I had to stop when I saw this scene, the CN Tower seemingly sandwiched between tow condo buildings.  I thought this would be perfect for this weeks theme.

This was shot with my iPhone 4s and processed with Snapseed to crop and for some minor adjusts and then with iColorama to create this overall painterly effect.

Hello From Israel – A Special iPhone Friday

A very quick post today to share a few iPhone images. I’m in Israel for a family wedding and am having a spectacular time. I’ll be spending the next few days exploring Tel Aviv and will also visit Petra, so stay tuned for more images.

iPhone Friday – Talking Phoneography

A couple of months ago I was asked by the President of my Photography Club to deliver a presentation on the basics of Phoneography. The presentation was a success and the members of the club that were in attendance that night were very appreciative of the information delivered and excited to explore the many of the apps that I talked about and the capabilities of their phone camera. As a result of this presentation I was then asked to write a guest post on the GTCCC blog.

The GTCCC (Greater Toronto Council of Camera Clubs) is an association that governs the photo/camera clubs in the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario stretching from Oshawa in the east to Hamilton in the West. Every month they ask one club to submit a guest post to their readership. I was honoured to be asked to contribute as a guest writer. You can find my post, Phoneography – Taking Big Pictures with a Little Lens by clicking on the link.

On another note, last week I was reading David Pasillas (aka iPhonePhotographer) and he was reviewing an app called DistressedFX. David writes terrific reviews and I’ve found a lot of apps and inspiration through him….check him out. I download DistressedFx but didn’t get a chance to try it out until a couple of days ago. I really like this app. I took this last summer in California but never really did anything with it. What do you think? Let me tell you a little secret…but don’t tell anyone 😉 the birds weren’t in the original image.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Street Life

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted an iPhone photo and when I saw this week’s challenge I immediately thought of this image. I shot this the last time I was in Manhattan but have never posted it. This is a part of street life you see in New York every day.

iPhone Friday – Ripley’s Aquarium

Ripley’s Aquarium, located at the base of the CN Tower in downtown Toronto opened to the public last month. From what I hear its been packed during the day and absolutely crazy on weekends. My photography club had planned to have a photo outing at the aquarium on the weekend but given the crowds we changed the timing to a mid-week evening outing. So this past Wednesday evening I went swimin’ with the fishes. I haven’t had a chance to process any of my images but I did manage to take some pictures with my iPhone so here’s a look at Toronto’s newest attraction.

iPhone Friday – Casa Loma Revisited

It’s baaaaack….iPhone Friday…for this week anyway. I do love taking pictures with my iPhone but life has gotten a bit crazy and I’ve let my iPhoneography lapse a bit. Here are some images that I shot while at Casa Loma last Saturday evening. All images were processed with Snapseed exclusively this time around.

iPhone Friday – Puddle Reflections

One of the workshops led by Denise Ippolito was at Graffiti Alley in Toronto. I’ve shot here before and the street art is just amazing. Unfortunately I couldn’t participate in the workshop as I had to work but it is only 5 minutes from my office so I walked over to say to the group. Of course while I was there I couldn’t let the opportunity pass me by without taking a few iPhone shots and this reflection was just to good to pass up.

Shot with my iPhone 4S and edited with HDR FX Pro.

iPhone Friday – Neptune Pool

Wow it’s really been a long time since I did an iPhone Friday post.  A couple of weeks ago I post photographs of the Roman Pool at Hearst Castle. You can see those here. There’s also an outdoor pool which is just as magnificent. I do have shots that I took with my DSLR but I wanted to share this iPhone image of Neptune’s Pool. This was shot with my iPhone 4S and edited in Snapseed.

iPhone Friday – Carmel Bakery & Coffee Co.

There’s a little bakery in Carmel called appropriately The Carmel Bakery and Coffee Co., that my husband and I just fell in love with. We headed there every morning for breakfast (they make a mean breakfast burrito) and their baked goods are just out of this world. If you find yourself in Carmel head over there.

iPhone Friday – Swimmin’ with the Fishes

What’s one of the things you do when you’re in Monterey Bay….well you go to the aquarium of course.  Here’s a couple of images that I shot with my iPhone. I’ll be sharing more Monterey images next week so stay tuned 🙂

I just posted a review of the Canon 70-200mm f/4L USM lens on my product reviews page. Why did I go with the f/4 instead of the f/2.8? Read the review here.

iPhone Friday – Santa Cruz Boardwalk

On our way down to Monterey Bay we stopped in Santa Cruz. We spend some time at the boardwalk amusement park. An amusement park right on the beach…who can ask for more. I’ll have some more pictures of this wonderful place next week.

Have a great weekend everyone.

iPhone Friday – I Left My Heart In San Francisco

Even though I had my DSLR with me through my travels I still had to take some shots with my iPhone. I didn’t bring my laptop with me so shooting with my iPhone allowed me to process images during down times and of course it also allowed me to share images on Facebook throughout the week. If you don’t follow me on Facebook (or haven’t “Liked” Edith Levy Photography) you can find me here. I do share some different images there so come on over and have a look.

Here are a few images from San Francisco.

iPhone Friday – Can You Spot The Difference?

I still had some images on my iPhone from my visit to the University of Western Ontario last week so I thought I’d share one more. I really love trying new apps but I still have my work horse apps that gets used all the time.

Here’s the image straight out my iPhone taken with Camera+

Western University, London, Ontario, campus, iphoneography

When I process an iPhone shot it always goes through Snapseed first for adjustments (when needed) in contrast, brightness, ambiance or saturation. I then also adjust sharpness and/or structure. I may stop there with Snapseed or try some of their different presets. My next favorite app is PhotoToaster. I just love the presets in this app but more than that the individual adjustment sliders give you fantastic control over the image. You can adjust exposure; temperature; lighten shadows; tint; blacks and so much more.

This image was processed with both Snapseed and PhotoToaster as described above. I did use a new app I just downloaded called Over. Over allows you to add text and artwork to your photos. Can I tell you how I found out about it??  You know those little free app cards you can pick up at Starbucks? Well last week Over was on the card. Yup…don’t overlook those, you never know what little gems you might find.

iPhone Friday – Back to Western

TGIF…wow has it been a hectic week…but good hectic. The week started with my son, Sam’s prom on Monday and then his high school graduation on Wednesday evening with lots of activity in between which explains why I haven’t kept to my usual posting schedule this week. On Thursday Sam and I headed back to the University of Western Ontario for his Academic orientation. While he was busy choosing courses I took the opportunity to walk around and take some pictures of this beautiful campus.  I’ll be back there often come the fall so I have a feeling you’ll be seeing more of Western 🙂

Have a great weekend everyone.

iPhone Friday – Vintage Tech

You know its funny when you’ve been to a place so often you sometimes forget to look around, I mean really see what’s there. I took a walk to the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Company) building for lunch the other day and just behind the escalator that takes you down to the food court is a wonderful display of film and recording equipment from the early days of television.  This time I took a few minutes to just look around and grab a couple of iPhone shots.

iPhone Friday – A Fine Feathered Friend

This past weekend was Henry’s Camera semi-annual camera show. I was planning to go on Sunday but I had so much going on this weekend that I wasn’t sure that I was going to make it. In the end I was able to swing over there for about an hour just before it ended. I didn’t have my DSLR with me but luckily my iPhone is never far from reach. A good thing as they had a display of birds making nice for all the paparazzi snapping away.

Have a great weekend everyone.
