Play Misty For Me

I captured this image last fall when I was out photographing on Ward Island. It was a fog filled afternoon and evening and I never got the sunset that I was after. This is the path leading to the water with a view of the Toronto skyline.

After processing in LR5 I ran the image through OnOne Perfect Effects and added the Glow preset.

Sphere of Light

Here’s one more attempt at light painting.  (You can see my first one here.) We were still on the island waiting for the ferry to take us back to the city and figured while we were waiting to play around a bit more with light painting. I was pleased with the red glow which were coming from the lights around the ferry docks.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Light Painting the Skyline

After an evening of shooting the Toronto skyline during Denise Ippolito’s workshop we decided to have some fun with light painting. This is something that I’ve always wanted to try and we had a blast experimenting with this technique. We hadn’t planned on doing this but putting on our “MacGyver” hats we used a small LED flashlight I had in my camera bag and the  string from Denise’s hoodie to tie to the end of the flashlight. Denise’s friend and fellow photographer, Lynn slowly started twirling the flashlight on the string and turning in place slowly. After a bit of trial and error this was the result. By the way Lynn is actually in the middle of that circle of light but because she was slowly moving you can’t see her at all during the long exposure. I posted images of the skyline on Monday (you can see them here) as the fog started rolling out. Notice the skyline in the background. The CN Tower was starting to disappear again as the fog rolled back in at the end of the evening.

Toronto Cityscape – Foggy Encounter

One of the workshops that Denise Ippolito led for my photography club last month was a sunset/night cityscape shoot. It was cloudy and raining for most of that day so there was no sunset and we almost didn’t have a cityscape. The best place to photograph the Toronto skyline is from Ward’s Island. We boarded the ferry to the island at 5:45pm for the  7 minute or so crossing which would give us plenty of time to walk around and set up for what was supposed to be a 6:50 sunset. As the ferry started moving and I looked across Lake Ontario I realized that I couldn’t see the island. All I could see was thick fog. We arrived at the island and I looked across at Toronto…it wasn’t there. OMG…there goes the workshop. After a few minutes of internal panic, Denise, being the ultimate professional and workshop leader, led us on a walk and help us “see” other beautiful parts of the island that we could photograph. Ok I started to think…this was ok…this was going to workout. Think positive…think positive…as soon as it gets dark and the city lights turn on we’ll have a cityscape….I hope!

Being photographers and knowing that light and conditions can change from minute to minute we set up our tripods by the waterfront and waited. Here’s the view…

….can you see the CN Tower? It’s there…honestly but at least we could now see lights and some of the buildings. We waited and as the minutes passed the fog started to roll out and our beautiful city came into view.  Here’s the progression…
